APPEARANCE

The B6 Notebook is similar to the A5 (review here). It has a plastic-coated, semi-flexible black cover with the B6 in gold foil on the front. The covers and pages have slightly rounded corners, red linen-like end pages, and cream 68 gsm Tomoe River dot-grid paper inside. Need I say more? It's a straightforward design that I absolutely love.

PERFORMANCE & FEEL

A5 notebooks are usually my favorite but B6 is probably second in line. These notebooks have a superb, convenient size. It is compact and portable, especially because it's not very thick - one of the many advantages of Tomoe River paper, even though it's the heavier 68 gsm version (compared to the usual 52 gsm). The covers are firm enough to give the notebook some structure without feeling like a hardcover. The notebook is well-made and very tidy.

The binding is snug and the best part is it allows the notebook to open easily and lie flat. That makes it ideal for writing on all parts of the page and it's always comfortable.

If you are unfamiliar with the 52 gsm Tomoe River paper, I'd suggest checking out my review of the Paper Cuts A5 notebook (review here). Ok. Let's talk about this 68 gsm paper! Here's how I feel about this stuff...

68 gsm Tomoe River paper is just as fountain pen friendly as the one most of us know, the 52 gsm Tomoe River. If you dislike the lightweight, crinkly, prone-to-dog-ear-ness of the 52 gsm stuff, then the 68 is the perfect alternative. It still offers all the great fountain pen friendliness, without the crinkle, dog ears, and lightweight feeling. It's still lightweight, but it's not - no pun intended - paper thin. The color of this paper is pretty easy on the eyes - not super bright white and not so yellow that it really affects the appearance of your inks.

I am one of those people who loves the crinkle of 52 gsm TR, but ultimately, I love having the option of both 52 and 68 gsm. The 68 performs really well, holding ink with almost no feathering (very rare), lower show through, and lower bleed through than the 52 gsm TR. With heavy ink use, the paper can get a little crinkly and it may warp slightly but it's insignificant.

I don't really waste time with pencils and ballpoints here. They work fine, along with markers and gel pens - expect a bit of bleeding with the markers. Nevermind all that. This paper is for fountain pens. The paper is smooth and provides a very pleasant, comfortable writing experience. The best part is how well inks shade and sheen - it feels more vibrant and intense, which I love. The thing is, it's just wonderful paper for fountain pens. Drying times are a little longer than average but you can always keep a blotting sheet at hand, or be patient and let the ink dry.
