Ink Shot Review: Abraxas Orange of Switzerland @laywines

Laywine's is carrying a new ink line from Switzerland - Abraxas Inks! They come in cute little bottles with corks and wax seals. The four inks I have tested are all scented, and there are many more colours in the lineup. You can contact Laywine's for more details or to purchase your own. They're premium inks with a hefty price tag of $29.00 CAD + applicable taxes.

Abraxas Inks describe these inks as the Classic Line, available in many colors - some are safe for fountain pens and others are not. These ones are! Thanks to Laywines for sending this for review!

PROS

  • Beautiful and classic orange color.
  • I have not experienced nib creep so far.
  • Well behaved.
  • Shades well.
  • Light scent is a treat - it's not gross and it doesn't stick in your pens long after cleaning.
  • Very elegant presentation! Classy as heck.
  • What a gorgeous gift this would be, both for a friend and for yourself!
Ink Shot Review Abraxas Orange of Switzerland @laywines 9

CONS

  • Pretty expensive for such a small bottle.
  • Cork is a pain to replace once you have uncorked it.
  • Bottle mouth is not very wide so it can be difficult to fill larger pens from.

OVERALL

The trend here with these inks is they are pretty classic, standard colors - at least the four I have - so they're quite nice, pretty, gorgeous presentation, but they have not yet given me the WOW! These inks are premium, spoil-yourself inks, with their classy presentation, light scents, and hefty price tag. The bottles themselves are not ideal for filling from, especially if you have larger pens. It's sort of a silly ink in terms of price and practicality, but it's always fun to try new inks. I think this would be an excellent gift or treat, but not a daily use ink based on the price and bottle size.

PROS

  • A dusky sort of grey-purple.
  • Work appropriate.
  • Adorable little bottle.
  • Bottle is easy to fill from when it's full.
  • Comes in a cute set with a storage box.
  • Decent shading.
  • Well behaved.
  • Shows some water resistance.

CONS

  • When your bottle gets low on ink, it's hard to fill from.

OVERALL

This is an interesting color... not quite a bright purple, and not quite a dull grey. Somewhere in between, which makes it work appropriate and still interesting. It may be hard to identify the color with finer nibs because it doesn't stand out much. It's not my favorite in the set, but I don't dislike it either.

Thanks Exaclair for sending this ink over for review! I posted a teaser a little while back and wanted to spend some more time with the ink before posting the official review, so here goes!

PROS

  • Larger box and bottle with wider mouth - easier to fill from. (Compared to 1670 Anniversary inks)
  • Appears to have some water resistance - perhaps because it's so saturated.
  • Gorgeous rich, shading purple ink.
  • Completely legible, even in fine, dry nibs.
  • Silver particles to top it off!
  • Classy presentation.

Ink Shot Review Jacques Herbin 1798 Améthyste de l'Oural  21

CONS

  • Particles always require extra care when cleaning.
  • Wider mouth could still be wider!
  • Flat base of bottle is hard to fill from when it's running low.
  • Ink feathers and bleeds on certain papers, rather randomly. Do a test before full page writing.
  • I couldn't make it sheen.
  • Purple inks can stain clear pens, so be careful.

This new launch of the 1798 ink line is interesting. I'm not really certain why the change has been made, but I like many of the changes - the boxes are still very nice (though not as cute), the bottles have wider mouths that are easier to fill from, and the purple is obviously very beautiful. I have always found these inks (1670) to be a little finicky and they really need fountain pen friendly paper to perform their best, and it's the same with the Améthyste de l'Oural. With the shimmer ink market rather flooded (Diamine, De Atramentis, J. Herbin), I wonder if many will flock for this purple, but at least the option is there. It's a gorgeous base color, and the silver shimmer is hot stuff!
