Review: @AndersonPens Replacement #6 Stainless Steel Nibs for Fountain Pens

Thanks to Anderson Pens for sending a set of these nibs for testing and a review! They have been really useful for testing papers, inks, and just playing around with. They're easy to use, affordable, and have also been great when I have newer pen friends over and they want to try out some different nib sizes.

APPEARANCE

The Anderson Pens replacement nibs have a single slit, a round breather hole, and they are laser engraved with the Anderson Pens logo, and engraved with some flourishes and the nib size. They are available in single tone or two-tone, but all are steel. I usually like two-tone but the all-steel version looks pretty cool in this case.

PERFORMANCE & FEEL

The nibs are really easy to put in your pen - just pull the nib and feed (or remove in whatever way is applicable to the pen) in the pen you want them in and replace the existing nib with this one! All nibs were smooth enough for me to enjoy them, the extra-fine giving the most feedback but not feeling scratchy. After several months of use, I ended up smoothing the 1.1 mm and 1.5 mm stub nib a little more - not because they did not perform well, but because I wanted a smoother writing experience. They were definitely not unpleasant.

They are all on the firm side but if you really need to squeeze out some line variation, you can apply a bit of pressure. They're not particularly soft, though. They are well tuned in that they do not skip or hard start, as you can see from the writing samples below.

I did clean them with dilute dish soap and water followed by just water, which is a procedure I undertake for every new pen for review. Sometimes there are machining oils or just bits of stuff left behind from manufacturing that can affect performance. I didn't really expect that with these nibs because every nook and cranny is mostly visible to the naked eye but I figured it wouldn't hurt.

PROS

  • These nibs can be used to swap into a Noodler's Ahab/Konrad, many Monteverde models like the Intima, Jewelria, Sequoia, Edison Pens, and more.
  • Great way to explore nib sizes and see what you like.
  • Excellent gift for pen friends.
  • Load up on your favorites and make some decent pens great!
  • Smooth, pleasant writers. If you don't find yours smooth enough, it's easy to tune it up with some micromesh at home.
  • No skips or hard starts.
CONS
  • Nib only, no feed, so you must provide your own feed.
  • If you're changing nibs while your pen is already inked, it can and will be a bit messy.
  • Some nibs may need additional tuning to suit your preferences.
  • Does not fit in every pen, obviously.
OVERALL

I really enjoy experimenting with different fountain pen nibs and I especially find this set useful for testing new papers and new inks. My favorites are obviously the broad, 1.1mm stub, and 1.5mm stub. Replacement nibs are a great way to make a pen that may have a dud of a nib a great pen, or at least salvage those pens whose nibs you might have destroyed somehow. They're versatile and easy to use. I would love to see a 1.9 mm option down the road.

I received these nibs free of charge for the purposes of this review over two years ago. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am currently employed by Anderson Pens but NOT to write reviews or positive reviews. I was not compensated monetarily for my review. Everything you've read here is my own opinion.
